Maurice Vlaminck's dramatic representation of nature, which earned him a place beside that of André Derain and Henri Matisse as a founder of the Fauve movement, owes its initial inspiration to the work of Van Gogh when he was at the Bernheim-Jeune retrospective of 1901, and its later formulation to the more structured landscapes of Paul Cézanne exhibited in the Salon d'Automne in 1907.

A self taught artist who never abandoned landscape in favor of more modern subject matter (e.g. the Cubists), Vlaminck espoused a violence of expression that yielded only to a concern for greater pictorial structure beginning in 1907.

The current work is a typical example of his mature expressionism possessing fiery brushstrokes, wind-blown trees, and strong palette, as well as a framework of architectural elements made up of simple geometric buildings.

Paysage de Printemps will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné being prepared by Maïthé Vallès-Bled and Godeliève de Vlaminck under the sponsorship of the Wildenstein Institute.
