This suite of four trompe l'oeil paintings of hanging trophies of the hunt was doubtless commissioned from the noted Swiss animal painter Ludwig Burckhardt to decorate the walls of a particular den, game room, or hunting lodge. Although the original environment in which these four impressive paintings were displayed is unfortunately unknown at this writing, it would certainly have been one with high ceilings and woodwork to match the tonality of Burckhardt's still lifes.

Ludwig Burckhardt was born in Basel and trained in Dresden, Munich, Rome and Paris. In addition to his work as an animalier and painter of trompe l'oeil still lifes, Burckhardt was a noted landscape painter. The Kunstmuseum Basel preserves examples of his work in both genres in its permanent collection.

    Estimate: $20,000 - $25,000.
