Rivaulx Abbey is a former Cistercian Abbey located near Helmsley in North Yorkshire. Founded in 1132, it was one of the wealthiest abbeys in England--one with 72 buildings, an abbot and 21 monks, 102 servants, and even a prototype blast furnace which produced cast iron of high quality at the time it was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1538. It became a spectacular ruin which remains a popular picturesque site for artists and tourists.
