One of the most celebrated landscape painters of the nineteenth century, Camille Corot was a leading member of the Barbizon school, which emphasized working directly from nature. His early works, characterized by bright light and vivid colors, gave way in his maturity to a more diffuse light and subtly blended palette as exemplified by the present Ville d'Avray. Corot's ability to create exquisite silvery tonal harmonies, which were greatly admired by his contemporaries, is most evident in the reflective passages of the river. With a color range that includes mixtures of grays, whites, greens, and yellows, and virtuoso brushwork throughout, this picture is typical of the artist's mature work. The composition also features some of Corot's favorite landscape motifs during this period: still water and gracefully leaning trees with diaphanous foliage. The scene also includes three small figures on the right bank and a single figure in a boat at the left.

The landscape views around Ville-d'Avray, a rural community in the Ile-de-France, close to Paris, were a favorite subject of Corot, whose family owned a summer home there. Other notable paintings of this area include the two Ville-d'Avray compositions in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, respectively.
