It was not until the age of twenty-six that Corot was able to devote himself completely to painting. His reverence to the principles of historic landscape painting can be traced to the teachings of both Achille Etna Michallon and Jean-Vicor Bertin. In Souvenir de Douai, Vu des Marais de Sin tonal values and mass create a sincere composition that relays the achievement on his plein air canvases, and his dejection of the avant-garde painting styles of the day. Marking the second part of his career is the softness of light and its subtle movement with shadow throughout his compositions, as well as what would become consistant motifs: sky, still water, trees, and hills. Souvenir de Douai, Vue des Marais de Sin establishes itself as a powerful expression of Corot's principles of composition and technique, offering itself as a subtle and convincing masterpiece.
