Woman Flower Painter at the Easel (almost certainly a portrait of his sister Suzanne-Estelle Beranger-Apoil), 1856
    Oil on wooden panel
    25 x 20-3/4 inches (63.5 x 52.7 cm)
Signed and dated lower left: Emile Beranger 1856

    Private collection, New York.

Portraits of women artists at the easel are quite rare before the later 19th century, and portraits of identifiable women artists at work even rarer. This remarkable, highly-finished portrait of a woman preparing to paint a sumptuous floral still life on a newly prepared canvas is the work of the French genre painter Emile Beranger, and his sitter is almost certainly none other than his talented sister, Suzanne Estelle Beranger Apoil (1825-c. 1874). A student of her father, Antoine Beranger, who was an important painter at the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres, Suzanne Apoil was an accomplished watercolorist and porcelain painter as well by the time she was 21 years old. Her specialty was flower painting, although she also painted figures and made skillful copies after paintings by Raphael and Guido Reni which were then in vogue. Like her father, she worked for many years at Sèvres, and is interred at the Sèvres cemetery. In 1856, the date of this portrait, Suzanne Apoil would have been 31 years old, which matches the appearance of the woman in the portrait. She was married to the painter Charles Alexis Apoil (1809-1864).

Condition Report*: Paint film in very good condition. Approximately five very fine hairline cracks running horizontally in paint film were inpainted to fill the cracks. There is some strengthening in the still life at lower right, in the blank canvas field behind the sitter (made slightly whiter with thin brighter wash), and a few scattered areas. Overall in very good condition. Framed Dimensions 37.5 X 33 Inches
