    PROVENANCE:
    Private collection, France.

We are grateful to Jan Davidsz. de Heem specialist Fred G. Meijer of the RKD for identifying this painting as the work of Jan Pauwel Gillemans the Elder.

Jan Pauwel Gillemans the Elder was born in Antwerp, and was first trained in Liege as a gold and silversmith (his father's profession). He joined the Antwerp guild in 1648 as a master painter. As this late work from his hand demonstrates, Gillemans was profoundly influenced by the art of Jan Davidsz. de Heem. However, certain idiosyncrasies of his style are notable, particularly his handling of drapery. Gillemans tends to render it as though it is made of the finest silk which cascades in a very liquid fashion over the edge of the table.

    Estimate: $5,000 - $7,000.

    Condition Report*:

Older canvas relining. Frame abrasion along right edge of painting (from a previous framing). Stretcher bar marks around perimeter of painting. Some paint thinning commensurate with age, and probably a cleaning at some point, is most noticeable in the drapery. Under UV examination there is a wash of old strengthening in the drapery folds and in the dark background around the perimeter of the central fruit motif, leaving the fruit itself essentially untouched. There are only a couple spots of inpaint: 1/4 inch paint loss in the shaker at right, in the small dark plum leaf on left, and a 1/2 inch apot of inpaint on the top of the shaker at right. Framed Dimensions 18.5 X 21 Inches
