Kurt E. Schon, Ltd., New Orleans, Louisiana, 1987 (label verso).

As Rosy as a Pippin - the Victorian word for "apple" - exemplifies British painter Harriette Sutcliffe's genre scenes with sweet children playacting like grownups. Here, a rosy-cheeked girl in an apple-red party dress and bow-trimmed shoes deconstructs her mother's flower arrangement in order to adorn her hair with a crimson rose. Sutcliffe's paintings celebrate the sanctity of childhood, maternal roles, and domesticity: in Gathering Plums and Gathering Roses, beautiful bonneted girls collect their offerings in the aprons of their skirts; in Her First Steps, an older sister teaches her sibling how to walk along an Oriental-carpeted hallway; and in Tired Out, a lovely teenage girl on the verge of womanhood naps on a banquette, a sleeping dog in her lap and a blossoming yard outside the window. Active in London between 1881-1907 and exhibiting at the Royal Academy, Glasgow Institute, and Manchester Art Gallery, Sutcliffe likely had formal training, as evidenced by her sophisticated handling of light and color and her attention to details of texture and pattern.
