Canaletto painted variations of this commanding view of the entrance to the Grand Canal seen from the north on many occasions. In the present composition, which derives from Canaletto's original designs, the viewpoint is closer to the banks of the piazza of Sta. Maria della Salute, the major motif in the painting.
