FRANZ KNÉBEL the Younger (Swiss 1809-1877)
    View Of Tivoli, 1871

    39-3/4 x 64-3/4 inches (101 x 164.5 cm)
Signed and inscribed by the artist lower right: F. Knébel fec. / Roma 1871

This luminous view of the dramatic landscape of Tivoli, with its trademark waterfalls, is a late work by the noted Swiss landscapist, Franz Knébel. Born in La Sarrax, Knébel, like his father Franz Knébel the Elder, spent most of his career in Italy. He specialized in the sweeping panoramic views of Italian ruins bathed in a golden light that are strongly indebted to the work of eighteenth-century German Italianate painter Jacob Philippe Hackert, who continued the tradition of Dutch seventeenth-century artists such as Jan Both.
