Lovis Corinth was one of the significant German artists of the modern era and is most often known as a founding member of German Secessionism, although he is sometimes called both a German Impressionist and German Expressionist. His earliest pictures are known for their naturalistic style, reflecting the influence of his studies at the Munich Academy in the early 1880s. After his period at the Académie Julian in France, Corinth's works reflect both Symbolist and Impressionist influences. With their bold colors, rough lines, and emotive sensibilities, his later works are often linked with Expressionism.
The Walchensee (Walchen Lake) in Bavaria was one of Corinth's favorite subjects, particularly during his mature career when he and his family spent each holiday there from 1919 until his death. As it was painted in April of 1912, the present work is one of the artist's earlier treatments of this subject. It also belongs to an important period in his career since, after suffering a stroke late in 1911, Corinth returned to painting in 1912 with a bold and vigorous style. As exemplified by Walchensee, Corinth's brushwork during this period becomes decisively urgent and his palette becomes brighter and stronger.
