    Known for her minimalist Japanese print-inspired landscapes and floral still lifes set against a neutral background, the Scottish painter Dame Elizabeth Violet Blackadder has won numerous awards in her lifetime, including the Guthrie Award, Royal Scottish Academy (1962), the Pimms Award for Work on Paper, Royal Academy (1983), and the Watercolour Foundation Award, Royal Academy (1988). In addition, she was the first female artist to be elected to both the Royal Academy and the Royal Scottish Academy, she received honorary doctorates from four Scottish universities, and she was appointed Her Majesty's Painter and Limner in Scotland. Blackadder's work is included in the collections of the Tate Gallery, London; Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh; McNay Art Museum, San Antonio; Museum of Modern Art, New York; National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C.; and Charles A. Wustum Museum of Fine Arts, Racine, among many other international museums.
