    PROVENANCE:
Kraushaar Gallery, New York (label verso with title).

Genre and portrait painter Louis Edward Grenet was born in San Antonio, Texas. One writer has speculated that his merchant father's import business near the Alamo may have enhanced the young future artist's awareness of the world, for he would spend much of his life in Europe. In 1878, he studied at the National Academy of Design and Art Students League in New York, returning to San Antonio in 1879, where he established a studio until 1885 when he went to Paris. There he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts with Alexandre Cabanel, and at the Academie Julian with Robert-Fleury and Bouguereau. He won first prize in the 1909 Paris Salon for a portrait of a woman, "Mariola." Not long before his death in Paris, Grenet painted a striking portrait of General John J. Pershing, Commander of the American Expeditionary Forces in France during World War I.

    Condition Report*:

Original unlined canvas on original stretcher with keys. Faint craquelure commensurate with age (primarily in the impasto). UV examination reveals only a few areas of restoration. There is a 2 ½ inch repaired Y-shaped tear in the region of the largest tree right of center. To the right of the signature along the bottom of the painting there is inpaint doubltess addressing losses from frame abrasion. Also a couple spots in the sky fluoresce, and also on the extreme perimeter where paint scuffs were filled in. Painting retains its original frame. Framed Dimensions 21 X 25 Inches
