EDOUARD-LÉON CORTÈS (French, 1882-1969)
Rue de la Paix, Place Vendôme, circa 1955
    Oil on canvas
    13 x 18 inches (33.0 x 45.7 cm)
    Signed lower right: Edouard Cortès

Born in Lagny to a Spanish court painter, Cortès is known as one of the great painters of the City of Lights. Inspired by an earlier generation of artists, his Impressionist style and plein-air manner of painting show the varying effects of light on his chosen subject matter--the streets of Paris. Cortès's oeuvre captured the bustling energy of Haussman's wide boulevards, the urban oases of the capital's parks, and the architectural icons of fin-de-siècle Paris.

This scene of Rue de la Paix near the Place Vendôme was a favorite subject of Cortès, which he painted at different times of day to study the changing light. Cortès's impressionistic brushwork places the focus on light, color, and suggested movement. Here, a horse-drawn omnibus passes a flower cart, as people promenade by the glowing shop windows.
