Claude Joseph Vernet, the leading French landscape painter of the eighteenth century, revived the classical traditions of Claude and Poussin to develop a naturalistic alternative to the more artificial treatment of landscape practices by Rococo painters Boucher and Fragonard. Based on studies after nature, he was able to combine the picturesque with topographical accuracy and earned a royal commission to paint the ports of France in the 1750s. His atmospheric coastal paintings, for which he achieved his greatest fame, capture the calm and sometimes stormy effects of harbor life as depicted at specific times of day. The current painting excels by virtue of the deliberate ring of smoky clouds that screen the port from the intensity of the morning light. Almost halo-like, these clouds shroud the vessels anchored in the distance while the busy work of the fishing village comes to life in the dappled foreground.
