    La Gatta della Famiglia
    Oil on canvas
    29 x 37 inches (73.7 x 94.0 cm)
    Signed lower right: Spadini

    Lexington Trust, Beverly Hills, California.

The most influential early 20th-century Impressionist in Rome, Armando Spadini applied his plein-air technique to portraits, landscapes, and figurative works, such as the charming La gatta della famiglia. Here, in a sunlight-suffused backyard, a boy attends to his younger sister, who nurses an injury from the family cat. Spadini's natural bright light sharpens the whites and greens of the composition while accentuating individuated brushstrokes.

Spadini developed his sophisticated handling of light and color within a relatively short career. Training first at the Scuola d'Arte Industriale in Florence, he then worked in ceramics, illustration, and fresco painting. In 1910 he set up a studio in Rome and began exhibiting in Secession shows here and at the Venice Biennale. His paintings are included in collections of the Galleria d'Arte Moderna, Florence; Jeu de Paume, Paris; Galleria d'Arte Moderna, Plaisance; and Galleria d'Arte Moderna, Rome.

    Estimate: $40,000 - $60,000.
