    SEVERIN ROESEN (German/American, 1805-1882)
    Still Life with Basket and Fruit, circa 1860-72
    Oil on canvas
    16 x 19-3/4 inches (40.6 x 50.2 cm)
    Signed lower center as grape vine tendril: Roesen

    PROVENANCE:
    Christie's, New York, Important American Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture, June 5, 1997, lot 52;
    Private collection.

    We are grateful to Dr. Judith Hansen O'Toole for her scholarly generosity. She has examined this work in the original and has confirmed its authenticity as a painting by Severin Roesen datable to the period 1860-72.

    A very similar composition of fruit on a table with the same spilled basket of strawberries, but on a rectangular panel rather than canvas, is in the permanent collection of the Spencer Art Museum, University of Kansas, Lawrence, Dr. H. E. Simon Fund (see Judith Hansen O'Toole, Severin Roesen, Lewisburg, London and Toronto, 1992, p. 125: 12 x 16 inches, signed lower center).
