    The finishing touch, 1872
    Oil on canvas
    28-1/4 x 15-1/2 inches (71.8 x 39.4 cm)
    Signed and dated lower left: Francois Lafon 1872

    PROPERTY OF A TEXAS MUSEUM

    PROVENANCE:
    John Augustus Robinson Moseley, Jr. (1898-1973), Dallas, Texas;
    Gift to the present owner from the above in 1967.

    The Parisian-born portrait and genre painter François Lafon studied with his father, Emil Lafon, as well as Alexandre Cabanel. This work predates his Salon debut by three years, but already shows his skill as a superb figure draftsman. The "finishing touch" in this painting is the flick of lint from the gentleman's cuff. Lafon renders this gesture through an complex foreshortening of the man's right hand as the middle finger is pulled back and lodged in the thumb. Located directly in the center of the painting, the hand showcases Lafon's mastery perhaps even more than his skillful rendering of the embroidered green silk court suit.

    Condition Report*: Original unlined canvas on original stretchers and in original frame. #8632 written on stretcher bar. Canvas supplier's stamp verso: H. Blanchet, 17 rue de Grenelle Paris. UV examination reveals the presence of an older varnish. There are spots and lines of strengthening which were made on top of the varnish to enhance certain dark passages. These areas of strenthening are all in the background and include the zone along the lower edge of the painting, in the shadow cast by the figure on the ground, and in the vertical architectural members of the cabinet in the right background, right of the figure. These areas of strengthening appear in daylight as duller spots against the varnish when the painting is viewed from an oblique angle.
