    Description

    Circle of Willem Kalf (Dutch, 1619-1693)
    Still life with ewer, vessels, lemon, marzipan and pomegranate
    Oil on canvas
    32 x 40 inches (81.3 x 101.6 cm)

    PROPERTY OF A TEXAS MUSEUM

    PROVENANCE:
    Newhouse Galleries, New York, inv. no. 16370 (label verso);
    William Lewis Moody III (1894-1992), San Antonio, Texas, by December 1978, acquired from the above;
    Gifted by the above to the current owner, December 15, 1978.

    This painting is a near-copy of Willem Kalf's painting of circa 1645 in the collection of The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, California (inv. no. 54.PA.1), which interestingly had originally belonged to French still life painter Jacques Linard (1600-1645). There is speculation that the Getty painting with all its gleaming vessels arranged so carefully had been a work Linard had commissioned directly from Kalf.

    Condition Report*: Glue lined canvas on newer stretchers as acquired by the museum. Craquelure throughout. Paint stable with exception of slight lifting of a small patch in far upper right corner. Old varnish with selective cleaning of the still life elements on the table. UV examination reveals a moderate amount of strengthening throughout the composition, just primarily in the upper right corner along perimeter, perhaps addressing frame abrasion, and in the drapery at the top in the dark background. Not much restoration in the still life proper, including only a bit in the pomegranate, glass, pitcher, and around the salt cellar and the large vessel with the disk just left of the ewer. In nearly all these cases, the strengthening seems to have been added to distinguish dark shapes against dark background zone.
