    Sotheby's, New York, February 12, 1997, lot 38;
    Private collection, Germany, purchased from the above;
    By descent to present owner.

    Polish painter, landowner, political activist, and member of the "Munich School," Bohdan von Kleczynski was born in Dubno/Wolhynien in present-day Ukraine. After attending school in Odessa and Krakow, he studied economics at the University of Heidelberg before shifting to a study of art. He took his first drawing classes in Warsaw, then traveled to Florence and on to Munich in 1880, where he remained until 1888, training both at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, and also taking private lessons in the studio of the Polish painter Józef Brandt, a prominent member of the Munich School.

    Upon leaving Munich, he settled in the village of Zielony Róg in the Human (today Zelenyi Rih in the Ukraine), and the following year (1889) he moved to his property in Knyszkowice in Podolia to work as a horse breeder. In 1916 he eventually settled in Krakow.

    Kleczynski distinguished himself as a painter of genre and hunting scenes, set in the villages and steppes of the Ukraine. Following the example of his older "mentor" painters, Józef Brandt, Juliusz Kossak, Alfred Wierusz-Kowalski and Józef Chelmonski-all members of the Munich School-horses are his favorite motifs, together with riders, resting Cossacks, hunting and sleigh rides, wolf attacks, and tavern life. His colorful scenes tend to be smoother than those of other Polish painters working in Munich-something that can be seen in the present work with its lush surface and decisive brushwork that is at once descriptive and painterly.

    It would indeed have been much simpler to work with a local auction house, and we had local options. But we never once regretted going with Heritage.
