Although Adolphe Monticelli's reputation fell into decline after his death, both Cézanne and Van Gogh greatly adored his work, the latter particularly praising his richly pigmented flower pieces. While indebted to French Romanticism, Monticelli prefigures Fauvism and Expressionism in his energetic use of rich colors and thick brushstrokes.

These elegantly and colorfully dressed figures, who leisurely lounge in a landscape setting, are typical of the fêtes galantes paintings for which Monticelli is best known. Although trained in the Neo-classical style in Marseille, Monticelli was exposed to a variety of influences while working in and around Paris from 1855-70. He met the Barbizon landscape painter, Narcisse Diaz, with whom he went on painting trips to the Forest of Fontainebleau in the late 1850s.

According to Sheon, the Walter Chrysler painting belongs to this important period of Monticelli's development (see literature above). It was during the late 1850s and early 1860s that he began to include Watteau-inspired, richly dressed figures in his landscapes, formulating his own style and specializing in fêtes galantes. Such pictures were to become the most popular throughout Monticelli's career.
