    Jan Nicholas Streep, New York (label verso);
    Private collection, New York.

    André Marfaing moved to Paris in 1949 to devote himself solely to painting. By the 1950s, he abandoned figurative painting and studied with abstract artists Francisco Bores, Roger Bissière, and Pierre Soulages. Marfaing worked in oil, acrylic, and printmaking, and primarily in black. His paintings are not about representing reality, but rather ridding the painting of any representational weight. Marfaing believed in passing the tangible in order to express the inherent nature of the painting. In early works, such as the present example, his gestures are violent in nature and impastoed. Marfaing never titled his works, so as to prevent influencing the viewer's interpretation; only the dates and dimensions are given as a reference.
