Collection of Mr. and Mrs. John R. McFarlin.

This work is accompanied by a folio (listing it as Honfleur, en Bretagne) comprising a certificate of authenticity from Findlay Galleries, Inc., signed and dated October 1965, as well as a a letter from the artist to Mr. and Mrs. John R. McFarlin, handwritten on a 6 7/8 x 9 3/8" black and white photograph of the artist, signed and dated December 24, 1965: Pour Madame et Monsieur John McFarlin avec mon grand plaisir de me d'avoir represente dans leur collection . . . . et en hommage (For Mr. and Mrs. John McFarlin with great pleasure for having me represented in their collection . . . . and with my compliments).

In Andre Hambourg's colorful view of the harbor of Honfleur, one of the most picturesque in Normandy, the Gothic-style parish church of Eglise St. Etienne (Church of St. Stephen) is visible on the far left of the composition with its gray Caen stone and pointed bell tower clad in the regional chestnut shingles. The church is the oldest in Honfleur (dating from the 14th and 15th centuries), and gives its name to the quai which it graces, together with charming half-timbered houses, restaurants and brasseries that overlook the central marina cluttered with boats. Like Eugene Boudin, Gustave Courbet, Claude Monet and Johan Jongkind before him, Hambourg relished painting the shifting light and atmospheric effects of Honfleur, as well as the vibrant reflections of human activity on the water of the Vieux Bassin in the foreground.
