    PROVENANCE:
    Juliet Pierpont Morgan, New York;
    Miss Margaret Phair, New York, and Canada, gift from the above;
    By descent to the present owner.

    William Stanley Haseltine studied art in his hometown of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and earned his college degree from Harvard University. Following the year of his graduation, Haseltine traveled abroad to Germany to study at the Düsseldorf Academy with a concentration in landscape painting. Over the course of his career, the artist became best known as a landscape and marine painter who had a special talent for conveying light and geological detail, making a prestigious name for himself both in America and abroad. The romantic aesthetic, idealized interpretation of nature and emphasis on tranquility present in Haseltine's landscapes are characteristics associated with the Hudson River School and with Luminism in particular.

    Haseltine traveled to countries all over the world in order to paint these sublime scenes and frequently visited Venice. Venetian Coastline at Sunset is a prime example of the artist's picturesque compositions where water and sky expand across the entire canvas, creating a sense of romance, serenity and grandness. Pink clouds settle on the horizon along with small, gliding boats and a narrow shore, lined with the buildings of Venice. In the foreground, small sandbars rise up from the water, and isolated wooden posts project a feeling of sweet independence from the busy city. Haseltine pays close attention to detail in the rendering of the ships and gondola, but loosens his brushstrokes as he paints the scene's reflection on the water and the soft, hazy clouds that fill the sky at sunset.

    Juliet Pierpont Morgan, sister of John Pierpont Morgan (JP Morgan, the financier), gifted Venetian Coastline at Sunset to her nurse and companion Miss Margaret Phair, of New York and Canada. It is unclear where or when Mrs. Morgan acquired the work, but the painting has been in the Phair family for at least five decades. It is likely that Venetian Coastline at Sunset has never been offered publicly, until now.
