    EXHIBITED:
Sherry French Gallery, Inc., New York, "William L. Haney: Recent Paintings and Works on Paper," New York, September 3-27, 1986, no. 11.

William L. Haney is renowned for his narrative-realist paintings that focus on depictions of city life, often utilizing an atmospheric, magic-realist light as seen in A Self-Portrait with Reservations. In his series of urban narratives, Haney finds a context in which public interest issues intersect with private lives. This edge provides the persistent core of the artist's works, which are often ambitious in size, complexity, and technical achievement.

A Self-Portrait with Reservations is Haney's satirical homage to New York. It is both a good-bye and a love letter to the place he loved, where he felt at home, but could no longer afford. With his usual sense of humor and irony, Haney portrays himself painting a copy of a pop-up postcard commonly purchased by tourists in many of the souvenir shops around New York. The postcard is a pun on Pop Art, as is the blimp in the sky's "pop" symbol. The work captures Haney's mixed emotions about leaving his beloved city through his use of warm, glowing colors, and is one of the most ambitious masterworks from the artist's oeuvre.

A Self-Portrait with Reservations was featured in Haney's one-man exhibition at Sherry French Gallery, New York in 1986 and was used as the gallery announcement for the exhibition. Haney's artwork is in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Guggenheim Art Museum, New York; The Butler Art Museum, Youngstown, Ohio, and Greenville Museum of Art, Greenville, South Carolina, among others. At the time of the 1986 exhibition, Haney's artwork was being actively purchased by institutions nationwide. Reviews of Haney's work have appeared in the New York Times, Art in America, and ARTNews.

Haney's career was cut short when he died at the age of 52 in 1993, at the height of his artistic powers. Shortly thereafter the Mulvane Art Museum in Topeka, Kansas was gifted many paintings by the artist's family to form a core, permanent collection of his artwork. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a tour-de-force from Haney's best and most important period.
