THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST

    EXHIBITED:
Federal Reserve Board, Washington, D.C., "Highlights and Footnotes of American Art from the Collection of Graham Williford," January 22-March 15, 1991, no. 28.

Thomas Hotchkiss is considered one of the more poetic of the 19th-century American landscape artists. A friend of the well-known Asher B. Durand, he first drew recognition in the late 1850s as a member of the Hudson River School, and moved to Italy in 1860, where he was welcomed into the literary and artistic circles of the American community in Rome. Among his friends there was the American expatriate Elihu Vedder, a favorite artist of Graham Williford's. Hotchkiss was born near Hudson, New York, and was active in New York City as a member of the American National Academy of Design.

This exquisite little landscape possesses everything for which Hotchkiss' very rare works remain so highly prized. Preferring to work in a small format, he carefully constructed the panoramic sweep of this deep landscape with impeccable delicacy and remarkable directness. Moving from more broadly painted brush and rocky outcroppings in the foreground, Hotchkiss pushes more deeply into space to a sunlit sap-green meadow where tiny figures are hoisting hay into a waiting wagon. Beyond that in the middleground a wide bend in the river catches the reflection of the bright sky and, at its edges, the just-turning autumn foliage on the slope of the nearby hillside. Beyond a bank of turning trees is a more distant meadow, then another rise which the artist grayed back with a broken color to suggest atmosphere. Beyond that, the purple ridge of the highest Catskills gather clouds above them. The scene is rendered wet-in-wet, almost in the manner of a watercolorist. There is a lot of medium in the earth tones, giving those areas a translucency which also records the press of the brush bristles down to the surface of the support. Although highly controlled, this painting is the opposite of a fussy, brushstrokeless manner. All the marks of the maker are present, creating an exciting, vigorously-worked surface which also reads naturalistically.

Condition Report*: Original unlined canvas on original stretcher bars with keys. Fully stable paint film. Faint craquelure pattern in the sky. Under UV examination, there is a modest amount of strenthening visible in the lower right corner of the landscape where the blasted trees are located as well as in the leafy green tree cluster in the middle distance on the right side. Possibly some inpaint in the left corner addressing frame abrasion. Framed Dimensions 10 X 15.5 Inches
