    The Hours, 1850
    Oil on canvas
    24 x 20 inches (61.0 x 50.8 cm)

    PROVENANCE:
    The artist;
    Ellen Sully, daughter of the artist; gift from the above;
    Mrs. Ruth E. Sherlock, Kingman, Arizona;
    Sotheby Parke-Bernet, Los Angeles, June 6, 1978, lot 536;
    Acquired by the present owner from the above.

    LITERATURE:
    E. Biddle and M. Fielding, The Life and Works of Thomas Sully (1783-1872), Philadelphia, 1921, no. 2338 (probably).

    Thomas Sully's The Hours is listed in the artist's register of his works, published in Edward Biddle and Mantle Fielding's The Life and Works of Thomas Sully (1783-1872), as having been copied from an engraving by Samuel Shelley (English, 1756-1808) with the same title. When the present owner purchased this painting from Sotheby Parke-Bernet, Los Angeles, in 1978, the lot was accompanied by a photograph of the inscription on the back of the painting prior to its relining that reads, "From Shelly / 1850 / 'The Hours' / Past, present and to-come." The photograph of the original inscription will be presented to the buyer of this lot.

    A miniature composition on ivory painted by Samuel Shelley in 1801 titled "The Hours" and depicting this same subject is featured in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. As in Shelley's image of "The Hours," Sully's figures on the left and right represent "the past" and "to-come," while the central figure represents "the present." Sully noted in his register of works that the painting was begun February 19 and finished February 24, 1850 and was presented to his daughter, Ellen Sully.
