American Modernist Nathalie Newking trained initially with Robert Henri, and then following her marriage to painter Lorser Feitelson moved in a new direction artistically. During the 1920s, the couple settled in Paris and there developed a decorative figurative "neoclassical" style influenced by early Italian Renaissance masters. The two early examples of Newking's work in the present sale are rare surviving examples of her Parisian manner, when she and Feitelson were working in a very similar idiom. Nonetheless, Newking's forms tended to be more sculptural than Feitelson's at this juncture, and her color more vivid. Indeed, when the couple exhibited their Parisian work of this period at the Daniel Gallery in New York in 1925, a reviewer for the New York Post noted that while "both artists have the modern feeling for form and organization," "Miss Newkins [sic] is the better draftsman and composes better...Color is uniformly pure and glowing" (May 2, 1925).
