Mildred E. Phelps Stokes was a member of the highly prominent Anson Phelps Stokes family of New York. She had four brothers and four sisters. Her oldest brother, Isaac Newton Phelps Stokes and his wife were painted by John Singer Sargent in 1897 (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York). As a member of one of the wealthiest families in America at the turn of the century, Mildred wears an exquisitely detailed and undoubtedly fashionable dress with matching fan. Kendall had sent Mildred a letter from his studio at 26 West Eight Street dated April 14, 1901: "Dear Miss Stokes: Shall you be able to pose for me tomorrow-Monday-morning? I shall be ready for you any time after half-past ten, in the chance of you coming bring with you any old fan you may happen to have; as I may want to use it. Sincerely yours, William Sargeant Kendall."
