    Estate of William H. Clapp;
    Goldfield Galleries, Los Angeles;
    Private collection, California.

    William Clapp was born in Canada in 1879 to American parents. In 1885, the family returned to California and settled in Oakland, across the Bay from San Francisco, where he grew up. Clapp began his art instruction back in Canada and later studied at the Académies Julian, Colarossi, and Grande Chaumière in Paris. Leaving Europe, Clapp settled for many years in Montreal where he was elected a member of the Royal Canadian Art Academy. Clapp returned to Oakland in 1917, where he served as the Director of the Oakland Gallery (now Oakland Museum) for over 30 years. From 1918 to 1930, Clapp showed his works with a group known as "The Society of Six," who had been primarily influenced by the principles of the French Fauvists. Clapp was a prolific artist whose later works are painted in a distinctive, pointillist style.

    Estimate: $12,000 - $18,000.
