William de Leftwich Dodge was a versatile painter who spent his entire career traveling between America and Europe. His oeuvre evolved from an academic style in the French Salon tradition to plein-air Impressionism, and at the same time grew to encompass a full career as one of America's most successful muralists. By 1921, Dodge was the highest paid muralist in the country, having painted murals for the café at the Hotel Algonquin, New York; the Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York; and for the Court of Jewels at the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco. He also taught at Cooper Union in New York from 1916-1929, and at the Art Students League from 1925-1929.
Although Dodge is primarily renowned for his grand-scale murals, his paintings are beautiful examples of American Impressionist paintings. The present work is one of the more atmospheric and intensely colored of Dodge's pictures, painted in Long Island. Dodge often painted the beach of Setauket, but the color and tone of Surf Under Red Skies particularly evokes a personal mood.
