Doyle, New York, May 4, 1994, lot 19.

Leading American muralist Will Low developed a style which blended French Barbizon and Impressionist influences with a more literal and vividly colored Victorian aesthetic. This vibrant explosion of autumn foliage, which Low painted in Giverny, provides a fascinating example of the way Low created a French scene in an American manner. The carpet of fallen leaves as well as those blades still clinging to the trees is rendered with meticulous care rather than brushy approximation. The tremendous intellectual control in describing so much detail owes an obvious debt to Hudson River painting which came before.

Indeed, Low was particularly concerned with an attempt to validate the achievement of American artists as something on par with past traditions. In March 1901, the same year he painted the present work, Low wrote an article for International Quarterly, "National Expression in American Art," defending the achievements of American painters of the day against claims that European art was superior; he sought to tie American art to the great traditions of the past. He argued American artists were "another link in the long chain which brings from Greece through Italy and France to the shore of our western hemisphere." He also wrote art criticism for Scribner's, McClure's and Century.
