Werner Drewes produced this painting the same year he completed his training at the Bauhaus in Dessau where he had studied there and in Weimar under Paul Klee, Wassily Kadinsky, and Lynel Feininger. This painting shows a powerful artistic debt to the work of Paul Klee. Drewes emigrated to the United States in 1930 where he worked for seven years in New York before settling permanently in Saint Louis.
