DescriptionViktor Schreckengost (American, 1906-2008)
Land and Ocean
Watercolor on Whatman board
22 x 30 inches (55.9 x 76.2 cm)
During WWII, Viktor served in the Navy's top secret Special Devices Division, Bureau of Aeronautics. Owing to his outstanding visual skills, he was involved in two inter-related projects: developing an effective program of radar recognition (since radar technology was very new and its blips and bleeps quite hard to decipher), and designing topographical maps of areas the Allied Forces were planning to invade. The maps became a critical tool in familiarizing the soldiers and pilots about the areas in which they would be carrying out important missions. This watercolor was a work Viktor painted after one such map. One of his actual maps appears behind him in the photo of him in his Navy uniform.
