Viktor Schreckengost (American, 1906-2008)
    K Street NE#1 and K Street NE#2 (two works), 1946
    Watercolor diptych on board
    20 x 30 inches (50.8 x 76.2 cm), each

    Town & Country Gallery, Cleveland, Ohio, "One Man Show," January 1948;
    Jane Hanson, Inc. Interiors, Cleveland, November 1951;
    The Bonfoey Gallery, Cleveland, Ohio, "From Jazz to Design: The Art of Viktor Schreckengost," May 7-June 5, 2010.

    Viktor painted these two urban watercolors while serving in the Naval Reserves immediately after the war. His surviving note on these works indicates not only that they were intended as a pair, but that their subject was the African-American section of Georgetown: "Row of houses on K Street, Washington, D.C. Negro section. Area west of #2 / Area west of #1." Throughout his life, Viktor was drawn to African-American culture which he incorporated, if not featured, in his work.

    Cleveland Plain Dealer art critic, Steve Litt, noted in his review of the 2010 Bonfoey Gallery exhibit that the "panorama of houses along K Street in Washington, D.C., painted in 1946,... stylistically resembles urban scenes painted in the 1930s and '40s by Charles Burchfield, a contemporary of Schreckengost's and another Ohio native" (May 30, 2010).
