In January 1948, after his return from the Washington area where he served in the Naval Reserves, Viktor held his first one-person show of his recent watercolors at the Town & Country Gallery in Cleveland. This work entitled Bisque was shown in that exhibition, and like the other watercolors displayed alongside it, has a sober, earth-toned palette even though it was not an scene of rubble or terrifying flights over wartime terrain which he also painted. He acknowledged that for a while, his impressions of the war became a lens through which he viewed a lot of his artistic subjects and motifs. Once back in Cleveland, he sought out subjects such as deserted Victorian mansions, with their evocation of nostalgia and decay, as visual equivalents for his feelings about the effects of war. Bisque, interestingly, is a painting of fired clay forms--something the war had separated him from and something he was longing to return to now that he was home.

Viktor's object files note of this work: "Still life of various shaped bisque pottery. Tans, reds, browns, greys. Shadows cast forward. Background white with grey wash areas. Dry brush character. Repainted; added detail and pattern."
