DescriptionTHOMAS HART BENTON (American, 1889-1975)
Sketch of a Union Soldier, circa 1929-1930
Graphite and wash on paper
13-1/2 x 9-1/2 inches (34.3 x 24.1 cm)
Signed lower right: Thomas H Benton
Private collection, Stamford, Connecticut.
This is a preparatory sketch for the History of New York mural that was intended for the New York Public Library. The mural was ultimately never commissioned, but Benton did produce some preparatory panels that are currently in private collections. The signature in pencil at lower right is consistent with the way Benton signed his work during the early part of his career.
We are grateful to Dr. Henry Adams for his assistance in cataloguing this lot. He endorses the attribution to Benton on the basis of photographs.
Slight toning to paper, but otherwise visibly good condition. Matted and framed underneath glass, not examined outside of frame.
