    More Information:

An important abstract artist of the 1940s, Sonia Sekula was born in Switzerland in 1918 of a Swiss mother and a Hungarian father.  She came with her parents to the U.S. in 1936 and attended George Grosz's private art school on Long Island, and the Art Students League, where she studied with Morris Kantor and Raphael Soyer. Her mature style is based on Klee and the work of Roberto Matta, Marcel Duchamp and Max Ernst, artists who often appeared at her parents' Park Avenue salon in the late '30s and early '40s. She also enjoyed a close association with Andre Breton.  Her first solo exhibition was at Peggy Guggenheim's gallery, Art of this Century.  Two years later she was featured at the Betty Parsons Gallery in New York, where she continued to exhibit until 1957.   In 1947 she took part in the International Surrealist Exhibition in Paris, and in 1950 had a joint exhibition with Max Ernst at the London Gallery in England.   Her work is characterized by delicate pencil- or ink-drawn biomorphic figurations arranged vertically, reminiscent of the work of Arshile Gorky and the totemic images found in American Indian culture.

Sekula committed suicide in Switzerland in 1963, the result of chronic depression. Following her death, her work was virtually forgotten until 1971, when Finch College in Manhattan held a small exhibition of some of the most important paintings of her New York years.  In 1996, the Swiss Institute in New York City mounted a retrospective of Sekula's work.  Her work has also been shown at The Brooklyn Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, New York and San Francisco.
