    More Information:

American abstract artist who was born and raised in New York City.

Budnick was greatly influenced by Piet Mondrian, whom he met in New York City while studying under Hans Hoffman.  Between 1940 and 1950 he produced a series of non-objective paintings influenced by his rigid geometric style and color palette.  At this time, he became friends with Harry Holtzman and Carl Holty, founders of the American Abstract Artists group.  Budnick also was supported and encouraged in his work by Hilla Rebay, the artistic advisor for Solomon R. Guggenheim.

After a brief stint in the army, Budnick headed to the Institute of Design in Chicago where he studied under Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, the founding director of the New Bauhaus and head of the school.  In 1952, he received a Master's in Architecture from Harvard, under Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus school in Germany.  Although Budnick earned a living as an architect, he painted throughout his lifetime.  In 1948, he was exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago in an exhibition entitled, "American Abstract and Surrealist Art."  His work is found in the Guggenheim Museum and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

    Estimate: $4,000 - $6,000.
