    Condition Report*:

Re-varnished canvas with overall craquelure, commensurate with age; pigments completely stable with no visible surface losses; under UV examination:  heavy varnish makes it difficult to read the extent of an earlier restoration, which includes areas of in-painting throughout the background (a considerable amount in the left background, notably 2 vertical lines, 4" and 5", to the left of the figure's head) and along the bottom edge; newer in-painting on top of the varnish appears as flecks throughout the figure's hat and forehead, under his chin, on his right collar, and in the central portion of his chest (notably a 3.75" diagonal line and a 3.75" horizontal line).
