Beacon Hill Fine Art, New York (label verso).

Robert Hogg Nisbet was born in Providence, Rhode Island. His artistic precociousness led his parents to enroll him in the Rhode Island School of Design when he was only eight years old. He later studied in New York and abroad. He taught at Brown University and was president of the Art Students League of New York, where he served as president from 1909-1910. This academic painting of a nude was produced in the "life class" of Frank Vincent DuMond, a French-trained academic painter who taught at the Art Students League for 59 years. One of the most beloved teachers in the history of American art, DuMond was the teacher of many important American artists including John Marin, Georgia O'Keeffe and Norman Rockwell, artists who worked in styles extremely different his own. Rather than molding students to paint in his own style, DuMond exhorted them to draw from life experiences.

Nisbet became an accomplished landscape painter. He became a full academician of the National Academy of Design in 1928, a life member of the National Arts Club, and one of the incorporators of the Society of American Etchers. During the early 1900s, Nisbet summered in Old Lyme, Connecticut, and eventually settled in Kent, Connecticut where he founded the Kent Art Association whose members included Willard Metcalf, a frequent painting companion.
