    (Possibly) William Randolph Hearst, California.

Among the foremost American artists to master the high-style trompe l'oeil painting that flourished during the late 19th century, Richard La Barre Goodwin is particularly acclaimed for cabin-door scenes like the present work. Populated with hanging game, rifles, gunpowder flasks and other hunting paraphernalia, these canvases were purchased by noted collectors including William Randolph Hearst (to whom the present work is said to have belonged), Senator George Hearst, Governor Leland Stanford and President Theodore Roosevelt, among others.

    Condition Report*:

Lined canvas, but retains original stretcher; under UV exam, appears to be a quarter-size spot of inpainting in bottom right (white) fowel's neck; otherwise, streaky, discolored varnish layer makes painting surface difficult to read. Framed Dimensions 77.5 X 49 Inches
