Description

    Polly Hoffman (American, 1890-1949)
    West Texas Hacienda
Oil on canvas laid on Masonite
    12 x 16 inches (30.5 x 40.6 cm)
    Signed lower left: Polly Hoffman

Born in Bryan, Texas in 1890, Willie Rossie Johnston - the artist we know as Polly Hoffman today - grew up in San Angelo and spent the majority of her years teaching and designing furniture in Wichita Falls. Before settling in Wichita Falls, Hoffman studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and was a student of Xavier Gonzales, Will Henry Stevens, and Adele Laure Brunet. She also briefly taught at Texas Woman's University in Denton. Utilizing a southwestern palette, Hoffman's impressionist brushwork is interrupted by her almost regionalist stylization of the landscape. Similar to other regionalists like Alexander Hogue, her trees, mountains, and rocks have clear color delineations creating not only shadow, but an incredible almost a three dimensional effect.

    Condition Report*:

There appears to be no major visible condition issues to note; under UV light, there appears to be areas that fluoresce in sky and white building, possibly due to pigment choice. Framed Dimensions 15.5 X 19 X 2 Inches
