Peter Hurd, known best for his regionalist watercolors of western landscapes, has close connections to Texas - painting a mural at the West Texas Museum in Lubbock as well as painting President Lyndon B. Johnson's official portrait. Hurd trained under famed illustrator N.C. Wyeth and would marry Wyeth's daughter a few years later. During World War II, the artist worked as a correspondent for Life magazine. It was during this time, that these two exemplary watercolors of Ascension Island were produced in 1944.
Estimate: $3,000 - $5,000.
There appears to be no major visible condition issues to note; not examined out of frame; framed under glass.
