Under the tutelage of William Merritt Chase, Martha Walter enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where she was inspired by Chase's artistic theories and impressionist techniques.
The expansion of the railroad in the late nineteenth century made remote areas of Long Island more accessible, and Shinnecock became a playground for wealthy New Yorkers. Opened in 1891 by Chase, Shinnecock School of Summer Art was one of the most successful summer schools of its period. Morning at Shinnecock was a work Walter produced there outdoors, as Chase both advocated and practiced himself.
