Lionel Walden was a distinguished seascape painter following his training in Paris under Carolus-Duran, the influential teacher of John Singer Sargent and Carroll Beckwith (the latter's work is represented in this auction). Around 1893-97, Walden was in England, living in Falmouth and painting the sea. Walden received medals from the Paris Salon and was made a Knight of the French Legion of Honor. He visited to Hawaii in 1911 and several times thereafter, and quickly became recognized as one of the finest seascape painters to work on the island. Walden died in Chantilly, France in 1933.

    Estimate: $20,000 - $30,000.

    Condition Report*:

Original unlined canvas on original stretcher bars. Paint film in very good stable condition. The painting has been cleaned in its former frame at some point because the old varnish layer is visible on the left, right and top edges consistent with having been masked by a frame. Stretcher creases are in the center and top, consistent with painting's unlined condition. Under UV examination the work is untouched by any restoration aprt from a handful of flecks in the lower right quadrant. In the sky there are some scattered flecks of inpaint and a couple one-inch long passages of repaint.
