Known for his Tonalist and Impressionist style of landscape painting, the Dutch-born Leonard Ochtman came to New York with his parents in 1866. Attending courses at the Art Students League of New York, he began exhibiting paintings in 1880. Ochtman returned to Europe in 1886, studying in Holland and painting in France, where he was profoundly influenced by the works of Corot. Upon his return, Ochtman worked in New York and later Connecticut, where he achieved great success and was hailed as "the Keats of landscape" (referring to the lyrical and romantic quality of his work).
