In a correspondence dated January, 23, 1963, Mrs. Dora Gaspard writes, "This pastel is one of a series Mr. Gaspard did as an artist soldier in the French Air Force in the Battle of Charlois in the First World War. Mr. Gaspard flew many observation flights and was wounded and was sent to the U.S. in 1916 to teach aviation, but still being ill, he went to the Southwest for his health.

"As Mr. Gaspard recalls vaguely, the title would be either Retreat from Charlois or To the Front at the Battle of Charlois.

"As for the price [...] Mr. Gaspard has most of his paintings in his own collection, and only permits the sale of a few a year."
