While obviously influenced by the Hudson River School painters, Hugh Bolton Jones represented the second wave of American landscape painters, adopting a more realistic depiction of the landscape. The sunlight that blankets the pines, grass and resort is so intense, one can almost feel the summer heat. It is this depiction of light that drew Jerry Malzohn to this painting and provided him with inspiration for his own art
After a successful career as a landscape architect Jerry Malzahn, president and founder of Malzahn Landscape Company, decided in 1994 at the age of 48 to take up painting as a hobby. Drawing on the same passion for nature, the land, flora and fauna exhibited in his business, Jerry was naturally drawn to landscape painting. Success came quickly with a first and third prize in landscape painting at the 1996 Texas State Fair. In 2003 he was selected for membership into the prestigious Salmagundi Club in New York. He now exhibits regularly in Dallas, Fort Worth, and New York. Jerry's passion for art soon spilled over to a passion for collecting. Drawn to artists of the Barbizon School, the Hudson River School, the Tonalists, the Luminists and American Impressionists, he began collecting as a tool for developing his own art. The paintings Jerry collected became, in effect, the teachers and mentors of his own art.
In September of 2005 the City of Richardson, Texas, held an "Artist's Collection" exhibit at the Eiseman Center. The exhibit consisted of the historic paintings Jerry collected plus his own art. The national publication American Art Review had an article on the exhibit in the August 2005 issue. Many of the paintings from the Collection of Jerry Malzahn in this auction were in the Eiseman exhibit.
