In Just Off 5th Avenue at 53rd Street (à la Childe Hassam) Guy C. Wiggins depicts an oblique view from the southeast corner of 53rd Street and Sixth Avenue, looking toward Fifth Avenue. St. Thomas Episcopal Church's looming gray tower is contrasted against a bright blue sky and pastel yellow-and-green foliage on a crisp spring day. Painted in 1939, the painting commemorates the opening of New York's Museum of Modern Art in May of that year.
Just Off 5th Avenue at 53rd Street (à La Childe Hassam) is also Guy Wiggins' tribute to America's foremost flag painter, Childe Hassam (1859-1935), who had visited this same corner on May 13, 1916. Before the United States entered World War I, New York City periodically decorated with flags to mark special occasions. Hassam stated that it was the celebration of Preparedness Day on May 13, 1916, that inspired his first flag painting, Just Off the Avenue, Fifty-Third Street, May 1916.
Unlined canvas; appears to be in overall very good condition; does not appear to be in-painting under UV exam. Framed Dimensions 38 X 33 Inches
